Save The Children India, a non-profit organisation
that envisions India as a child friendly nation.
The mission of the Special Care Center, which was started in 1982, is to provide direction and meaning to the lives of underprivileged children with hearing and mental disabilities.
All the students hearing and speech skills are assessed by an audiologist and speech therapist after which apt weekly therapy sessions are planned, designed and followed.
The Special Care Center has a school that provides holistic education with academic curriculam and extra-curricular activites for the children. For hearing impaired students, the SEBI syllabus is followed for pre-primary sections as the suggested curriculum targets the development of speech and language skills including communication, storytelling, environmental studies etc. In addition to these, drawing, craft and computer courses are also taught.
Older children receive vocational training in carpentry, plumbing and electrical wiring, tailoring and cooking as part of the Zeeman Vipula Vocational Training Center
The children who attend are from the slum communities of Bandra East and would have no access to education if our school did not exist. A total of 250 children attend the Special Care Center.
