Save The Children India, a non-profit organisation
that envisions India as a child friendly nation.
2009 marked 6 years of the Delhi Project , in which this division has gone from strength to strength. It was also a year of change for the office as new structures and norms were put in place but tenacity and hard work helped in successful adaptation.
Alongside these efforts, the programme places strong emphasis on academic assistance. It ensured that 24 children who had dropped out of schools have been enrolled and trained with 20 of them rejoining formal schools in April 2010. Children who under-perform in schools were identified and assisted, with 39 out of 60 students showing significant improvement.
The Adolescent Girls programme similarly catered to 20 girls who had either never been to school or had dropped out, with a comprehensive curriculum covering a gamut of topics, both academic and vocational. 40 women have been educated through the Adult Literacy programme and more have enrolled for the current year.
The project’s state of the art computer centre with 12 computers facilitates the Computer Literacy Programme and students have enrolled for basic 4 – 6 month courses. The beauty parlour called ‘Nikhaar’ was inaugurated and provides all parlour services along with the weight reduction and bridal make up facilities. An experienced and trained person with 16 years of experience has been recruited for the same and the project hopes to make the parlour self-sustaining soon. To fulfill the need of conducting the awareness and training sessions, a new multimedia-conference room that can seat 175 students was built in 2009. It will be equipped with the necessary audio-video facilities and will also be used as the resource centre for children.
2009 saw the students participate in marathons, go on field visits and participate in plays. Awareness and training programmes impacted over 3000 people and 15 community health awareness camps were conducted as well. All of the current projects are now fully funded and further funds are in place to launch the anti-trafficking initiative and the Delhi Project Office is now looking forward to another year of challenges and triumphs.
