History

Sister Organisations of Save the Children India
  W.I.S.E.

In a developing country like India where women repeatedly face discrimination in all walks of life, there is an imperative need to educate socially disadvantaged young girls and women by way of non-formal education and vocational skills. The Women’s Institute of Social Education (W.I.S.E) was founded in 1992 in order to address this pressing need and cater to the requirements of young women in local communities with the aim of empowering them both economically and socially.

For over 15 years, this holistic program has equipped young women with the skills necessary for them to lead more self-sufficient lives. The girls are taught how to tailor and embroider dresses, baby garments, handkerchiefs, curtains, cushion covers, sarees, frames, wall-hangings etc. The finished products are exhibited on sale, with the intention of providing the girls with a platform to sell their items, and guaranteeing them a steady and reliable income.

In addition to vocational training, the organisation also aims to provide young women with the knowledge and information necessary for day-to-day living. In this regard, it imparts basic non-formal instruction to these girls, such as advice on how to manage finances, how to go about daily chores, and how to ensure the preparation of a wholesome and nutritious diet.

Since its inception, W.I.S.E has trained over 4000 young women through its 25 centers in the suburbs of Mumbai. With these figures rapidly expanding, W.I.S.E has proved the effectiveness of vocational and non-formal education in the empowerment and self-sustainability of socially disadvantaged women and girls in the country.

Pride India

PRIDE INDIA is a development organisation focused on empowering rural poor communities to improve their quality of life. Through an integrated socio-economic approach, it prevents the migration of families from rural to urban areas and invites reverse migration of families from urban setups. Women and children are the primary focus in these developmental programs and activities. PRIDE INDIA is currently in operation in Mahad, Poladpur, Mhasla and Shrivardhan blocks of Raigad district and at Sastur in Osmanabad district of Maharashtra state. Thus far, it has been successful in developing people centered and people owned models of development.

PRIDE INDIA entered into partnership with the Christian Children’s Fund in 1986 to address the area’s child development needs. The program outlay in this sponsorship-based partnership revolves around six primary sectors viz., Early Childhood Care and Development, Health & Sanitation, Basic Education, Nutrition, Livelihoods & Emergency. Apart from this, the organisation has initiated a women’s credit cooperative society as well as initiated around 625 self help groups and implemented the IEC PROGRAM of the pilot project on Rural Water Supply and Sanitation.

PRIDE INDIA believes that our nation’s most valuable assets are human resources upon which depends the development of all other resources. It’s faith in local culture, values, traditional expertise and knowledge has provided the village communities with an opportunity to learn new skills and develop a more positive attitude through self- involvement in achieving the desired change.
